Many years ago, I met a man in front of a school in Southern China – a tall, rugged, “blacksmith like” mountain of a man.Ī man who I could tell instantly upon looking at had worked out all his life – and I don’t mean pumping dumbbells in the gym.Ī man who KNEW what hard, heavy, REGULAR physical training was all about – a man who had that deep chest and massive shoulders we often associate with wrestlers – – along with the mandatory “cauliflower” ears – – and massive “beefcakes” for upper arms. And second, even if you aren’t interested in the above – let me tell you this, a man’s grip tells you a LOT about him (or her), my friend. Ronald Craig (right) and fellow soldiers of the 3rd Platoon, Combat Company, 1-32 Infantry, return from a two-week patrol in Afghanistan. Think of the sort of overall body strength, and specifically – GRIP strength these sort of workouts (movements) build. While they might not exactly carry as much weight as their medieval brothers, carrying between 20-30 kg rucksacks in all sorts of extreme conditions and challenging terrain (think moutainous terrain in Afghanistan, for instance), ain’t exactly “easy”. Heck, these men used to cover miles in the heat of battle wearing suits of armor that might weigh up til 110 lbs (NOT kidding you) – – not to mention carry swords, maces, and all sorts of other deadly weaponry which ain’t exactly light (between 2-5 lbs for swords and probably more for other weapons).Īnd if you think 2-5 lbs is light – think AGAIN – in the heat of battles – swishing that sword around as if your life depended upon it (it did!) – and moving around in heavy armor …Ĭloser to “home” (recent times, should I say), look at the training of the US infantry. Overall health, super STRENGTH and elite levels of fitness, sure, but what else?Ĭertainly not a six pack in terms of what you expect for (and what passes as) a six pack today (hint – that isn’t even CLOSE to real strength).Ĭertainly not biceps with epochal peaks in the second valley (ok, I made that description up, but you’d be surprised at the rubbish that passes for “muscle growth” in the gyms these days!)Īnd while you could say “strong legs” – yes – you’d be right – but the real common denominator is this – – a crushing GRIP. Wrestlers, strongmen of yore, boxers, elite athletes, martial artists, and of course those in the military – – both today – and in the OLD days – – WHAT did they have in common? Why exactly should you be concerned about grip strength, my friend?įirst off, let’s take a look at real strongmen - both today and in the past (although admittedly it’s hard to find a REAL strongman today – – most training today has sadly being reduced to “puffing and buffing” in “chrome and fern land” with the bros). No, this is very achievable – very true – and yours truly – and many other Gorilla Grip fanatics will testify to it. One being workouts that tax the entire body as a whole – – NOT isolationist movements – – workouts that build rugged STRENGTH – supreme inner HEALTH and vitality – and STRIP the fat off your frame quicker than sweat dripping off a “fat man at a dance”, hehe.Īnd two – – and TWO is what this course is all about – – building a ROCK SOLID, CAST IRON, grip of STEEL – – that has an “unnatural, kung fu like pull” to it. The trip to Astoria, depending on your route, will take 1.5 to 2 hours. Today, you’ll head west from Portland to the Pacific Ocean, but before you actually meet up with the sea, you’ll encounter the 14-mile-wide mouth of the Columbia River at Astoria. Remember that you will need a Forest Service–issued Oregon Pacific Coast Passport to park or camp at state parks. If you travel with a tent or RV, there are excellent campgrounds in state parks all along the coast. Bring a fleece, a hoodie, a hat, and some kind of rain gear, no matter what time of year you visit. So here’s a week-long itinerary just for the Oregon coast. But this rugged seascape offers exciting sights and experiences like whale watching, surf-pounded white-sand beaches, giant headlands, lonely lighthouses, and scenic byways that leave the highway and take you to places of spectacular natural grandeur. The Oregon coast is wild, windy, rocky, forested, with a lot of towns and villages that almost look like afterthoughts. The water’s too cold for swimming, and if you crashed your surfboard into one of the offshore rocks, you’d be a goner. But why do that when there is so much to see? Spending a week exploring the Oregon coast will reinvigorate your senses, especially if you are an active traveler who likes to get out and go for a walk on the beach-even if it’s rainy-or hike along a forest trail with stunning views of the Pacific below.īear in mind that the Oregon coast is not a bikini-and-surfboard playground. Staying on this (usually) two-lane highway, you could easily cover the entire coast in 2 or certainly 3 days. 101, the main artery, winds, climbs, twists, and curves along the entire coast, often but not always with the ocean in view. Adams lived in a house near the lighthouse and every spring she opened the light for the season and every winter she closed it down after the fishermen had pulled their boats in for the winter. The Oregon coast stretches from Astoria in the north to Brookings in the south, a distance of about 364 miles. She had already been taking care of the lighthouse for the final year and half of her husband’s life, due to his illness. At that point, Maisie Adams was 30 years old and caring for three children between the ages of 1 and 7. She operated the New London Lighthouse from 1943 to 1959, having become the lightkeeper after her husband, Claude, died of cancer at age 40. Maisie Adams was Prince Edward Island’s only woman lightkeeper. Maisie Adams-New London Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island Denise cared for the lighthouse until 1927, when she fell down the slippery lighthouse stairs and broke her arm, leaving her unable to perform her duties. In 1913, lightkeeper James Arsenault died, leaving his wife, Denise, in charge of the light. The Arsenault family was responsible for the light for 65 years. In the late 1800s, this was a resort destination and home to the grand Inch Arran Hotel. It overlooks the Chaleur Bay in New Brunswick and is still in operation as a range light. She kept the light on at Discovery Island for over thirty years before finally retiring to Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 67. At the time she was appointed lightkeeper, Mary had two daughters and was supporting her own family while also caring for her ailing father. Although she officially became the Discovery Island lightkeeper in 1902, she had already been caring for the lighthouse for five years while her father, the official lightkeeper, was suffering from a long illness. It is possible that Mary Croft was Canada’s first woman lightkeeper. Mary Croft-Discovery Island Lighthouse, Discovery Island, British Columbia As such, there were several women lightkeepers across the country throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That person was often the lightkeeper’s wife or child because they were already in place and had the knowledge and experience to operate the light. As the position was awarded for life, when a lightkeeper passed away, someone had to immediately take over. Officially, lightkeepers were usually men but, in reality, the whole family helped to keep the lights going. Such was the life for Canada’s women lightkeepers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Add to that being a grieving widow, or a person caring for an ailing spouse or young children. Imagine the solitary life of a lighthouse keeper: working alone in a remote location, throughout the night and during storms, always making sure that the light never goes out. It doesn’t matter, fundamentally, as Signe’s self-destructive path is doomed whatever she does, but Borgli loses a few of his own jokes (a big-hearted drug dealer who realizes he’s been caught by Signe when recalling she claimed she was missing a toe, a standout character) in the name of his ticking time bomb of a lead. It’s subtle enough to avoid cartoonish trappings where fantasies pop up and burst like animated speech bubbles, but loses focus in the name of some kind of discretion. Signe’s delusion takes us deep into her mind as her existence balances between actions so reprehensible she must be making them up and daydreams so wild it’s a real shame they’re actually untrue. It’s a nice thought for this man but a shame for what could have been a despicable modern-day “Bonnie and Clyde”, instead locking you in a room with, as Julie knew from the start, the worst young woman you will ever meet. And that’s what happens to Thomas: a strange kind of Instagram boyfriend who, instead of succumbing to his girlfriend’s vices, simply, well, does better and sees the light and fades from view. Visual gags sing as much as caustic scripting, as Signe throws her laptop out the window for no real reason before later being told by Anders Danielsen Lie (in the greatest cameo of the doctor-turned-actor’s career) that she has such a bad personality that a police car is waiting outside to execute her.ĭeath rarely fades from view in Borgli’s increasingly bleak comedy, which does somewhat of a disservice to the narrative trajectory - not because it flirts with oblivion but because its path is so stratospheric and dogged in the direction it’s going that it can be pretty hard to hold on for your life and not get left behind. It’s beyond satire and extremely close to body horror, as the disease mutates and the genre of “Sick of Myself” swells until it explodes, leaving a bloody mess in its midst.īut however sticky “Sick of Myself” gets, there’s rarely much doubt about how funny it is. But then what? The lies pile up, and her seesawing existence between self-pity and a search for something always more painful becomes increasingly corrosive. Finally, everyone around Signe begins to notice her plight (and Kujath Thorp maintains an awe-inspiring level of deluded stubbornness throughout) and, for a minute, she’s won. Many, many pills later, the rash begins to spread. Because does pain or pleasure really exist if you can’t see it? Signe decides the only way to be noticed will be to take the very necessary and very illegal drugs that will give her an extremely rare and serious skin disease. Borgli takes the film in a darker direction than the vignettes where these big kids just keep embarrassing themselves (she pretends to have a severe nut allergy, while he steals, uh, chairs). Thomas’ career as an avant-garde kleptomaniac artist skyrockets, and Signe is coughing up dust. ‘In Flames’ Review: This Pakistani Horror Film Shows How the Strings Attached to Gifts Can Strangle Youīut there’s a shift. It might be how they fell in love but it’ll also be how they grow to despise one another, their shared vices quickly turning into a competition: When two people are dying for attention in this way, the only possible outcome is total annihilation. We begin with a shared focus on Signe and her artist boyfriend Thomas (Eirik Sæther), two equally grating people obsessed with doing bad things (sometimes to make other people feel bad, but also just to feel literally anything themselves) because they don’t know how to do anything else. When Renate Reinsve’s wandering heroine Julie from “The Worst Person in the World” worried about just how detestable she might become, she was probably thinking about someone like Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) in “ Sick of Myself.” Another Oslo Pictures feature, though more acerbic and uncomfortable than Joachim Trier’s beloved romantic comedy, Kristoffer Borgli’s scathing portrait of nihilistic narcissism taps into similar deadpan humor but walks a much more precarious tightrope between uncomfortable satire and plain cruelty. Utopia releases the film in theaters on Wednesday, April 12. Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. |
